Ilha de Tavira and the Ria Formosa

Tavira is practically within reach of the island of Tavira, one of the Algarve's most popular beach destinations. This huge sandbar stretches all the way to Fuseta, some 15 kilometres to the west. This is one of the few islands in the region where you can pitch a tent, and the designated campsite near the pier gets crowded during the summer. Serving sunbathing seekers is a handful of cafes and restaurants. If you'd rather miss the crowds, just turn your slippers west and in 20 minutes, you'll end up in your own space. During high season, you can take ferries directly to the island from the river in Tavira. Alternatively, there's a year-round ferry that leaves from the pier (weather permitting) at Quatro Águas, two kilometres east of the town centre. It is also possible to explore the beautiful Ria Formosa by joining one of the tourist cruises that operate on Tavira's riverside.
